Since the invasion of the
menace of Boko Haram is now like wild fire that blow from all directions to no
direction, many criminals both petite and grand, are now queuing and hiding behind
the menace to perpetrate their criminal activities. As it has already been
discovered and revealed, the title, Boko
Haram is now splintered into different group of both criminals, hoodlums and
treasons, which has given the room to the various division of the throng of
insurgency. According to some analysts, we now have Political Boko Haram;
Religious Boko Haram; Traditional Boko Haram, Bombing Boko Haram etc. Each of
these groups has been analyzed to have been somehow operating distinctly and ‘jointly’!
Therefore, even a petite thief can now easily tie some wires and obsolete items
around themselves and rob people claiming they are members of Boko Haram
insurgents. This is what happened in Suleja town of Niger State in three years
ago.
On that particular day in
the month of November 2012, nobody had imagined such young handsome boy who
walked gently into the new superstore at the opposite Old PHCN office in
Suleja, could be anything related to criminal let alone himself indulging in
any crime. Such a fair complexioned young secondary school leaver could have
been using the better part of his life planning his ascendency to obtain a
university education rather than innovating such dastardly act of impersonation
in criminality. If the brains of thievery as initiated by the teenager who
claimed to be nineteen years as at the time of this criminal incidence, was
cleverly channelled to other creative ideas, such could have attracted the
public attention in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.
Around 11AM, the teenager
arrived at Varieteez Zone Superstore, opposite the Old PHCN office in Suleja,
on a motorbike as the passenger. The motorbike rider waited for him as he came
down the vehicle to enter the shop in the pretence to be a potential customer
to the superstore. He went straight to the shop hall after passing by the shop
owner, a young woman, who was sitting outside, in expectation of the day
regular patronage from buyers and customers. From the shop hall, the young teenager
called out for the shop owner to come in and serve his groceries demand.
Happily, the fairly complexioned young woman hurriedly rushed inside the shop
hall in aspiration to make a morning sale. She approached the young intending
customer with intention to guide him to pick his grocery items. Unfortunately,
her preposition was wrong. As she got close to ask the young customer about his
required items, there was a sudden change in the attitude of the young lad.
First, he authoritatively mandated the young woman to shut the main door
entrance of the shop. Astonishingly, the shop owner summoned the courage to
inquire for the reason for such command. The young lad frowned his smooth
handsome face and retorted: “do what I told you if you still want to stay alive...else
I will bomb you and your shop now...”
The woman had shocking grief
ran over her entire body system, as she never anticipated the kind of words she
was receiving from the teenage customer. In her reluctant zeal, the young
teenager raised his long-sleeved shirt to reveal some gadgets tied to his
abdomen position. On his abdominal area was different coloured wiring gadgets
and some carbide containers firmly tied to his body. On the right hand side of
his abdomen was a continuous red light beep. To aggravate more fear into the
already frightened woman, he removed a mouse-like gadget from his pocket which
he claimed as bomb trigger remote control that he could use to detonate the
bombs tied around his body. To cap that, from nowhere, a pistol appeared in his
hand which unknown to his victim was a well-fabricated toy gun. During the
process of displaying this creativity, he did not say another command before
the young woman shivering went to shut the shop entrance door as earlier
ordered.
“Now, go to your safe and
give me fifty thousand naira now”, said the teenager.
“Haaa! I don’t have such
amount o. I have not sold much since morning”. The young woman replied amidst
fear and shivering.
“Okay, you are proving to be
stubborn eh? Now I will rape you and you will still provide the 50k for me”
“Eeeh? Oga please I am a
married woman o. My husband will kill me if such thing happen even by
accident.”
“Don’t make me vex o.
Because if I press this red button on this remote control, both of us will be
blown off by the bomb all over my body...”
This conversation between
the teenage criminal and the young woman (shop owner) ensued for a while before
the lad suddenly change his mind for the woman to give him any amount she had
with her. The woman hurriedly removed the total sales of about seven thousand
naira (N7,000.00) she had made from morning sales till that period. The young
lad collected the money from her and then reiterated: “look, don’t shout even
after I am gone. As you can see, I am a member of Boko Haram and if you make
any noise, my people will come here and bomb everybody...”
With the instinct of such
enormous fear and the pugnacious attitude of the lad, the young woman actually
kept mute until the criminal walked to the waiting motorbike and left with the
rider. As soon as their appearance was clear from that location, she let out a
sorrowful yell that attracted all the people around. After narrating every of
her ordeal with the young criminal, some young men ran along the direction of
the road where the criminal had followed
to see if they could catch them, as it was simply obvious that he was just an
impersonating criminal. But that was to no avail. However, some neighbour
suggested the matter be reported to the police instantly but the young woman insisted
to wait for the arrival of her husband, who was away to his office in Abuja,
before the police report could be made.
Later in the afternoon, her
husband came to the shop and after hearing about the incidence, with the
company of his wife, he proceeded to the Suleja ‘A’ Division Police Station to
lay his complaint. Fortunately, after their statement, the police asked the
young woman if she could identify the criminal if she saw him. The woman
replied in positive. In minutes later, the young criminal who had already been
arrested by the police after trying to exhibit the same act of criminality at
another location in Suleja, was dragged into the DPO’s office where the woman
and her husband were sitting.
“Yes, yes, this is the idiot who robbed me
claiming he was a Boko Haram.” The woman shouted at the sight of the young lad.
Next thing was the teenager
on his knees and begged the young woman for forgiveness. A mere look at the
teenager would reveal how severely he had been battered and tortured by the
police and the cell inmates. He had swollen portions all over his face and
head...
