Christmas Merriment, Bustling And Hassling: A Review Of Historic Background

Christmas as a normal annual celebration in the domain of the Christian faithfuls, has been doctored in different details by commentators and scholars who have done distinct review on the series of activities that always accompany the yuletide celebration and the background. Some people have been too baffled with the incidental pace of activities both in jocundity and in impiety during this season, as if whatever never happened this period will never happen another period of the year.

Christmas Tree

As a common experience during the Christmas season, it is a period when many people initiate certain celebration activities in their domestic lives. It is a season when many young people who are living outside their localities of birth, wish to return home in a more materialistic and decorated status. Some are even on the zest to appear in flamboyant status different from their real life in effect to impress others back at home. Some may even borrow material possessions such as cars, attires, bags etc, just to go to their villages to impress the villagers as if they are in opulence. Some may not borrow to impress, but may use this period to expend all the savings they have made throughout the year in their various employment or entrepreneurship. It is simply a season of show-off or flamboyant display of personalities.

To some youth, it is the season of playing the game of money on the fast lane. This means that many young men and women are willing to do anything to get money at all cost. For the sole purpose to having a memorable Christmas celebration, many young people are willing to do the abnormal hassling just to make extra income for the seasonal celebration. In this quest to acquire extra income, many young men and women, do go out on extra mile of breaking the law of the land. Many do take to stealing and robbery. Some may even take to armed robbery simply to garner more money for the yuletide celebration. In this process of robbery or stealing, many do lose their lives and thereby making it an untimely and unwarranted end to their purpose of living, just for their irrelevant zeal to celebrate the yuletide, which will always come annually, in the subsequent years of their future.

As experienced, this is normally a period of impious and vicious activities such as incessant kidnapping, ritual killers stray, fraudsters (419) spree, burglars hassle, robbery pathetism etc. These negative vices had over the years made many right thinking minds to query the origin of the yuletide season otherwise called Christmas. Although it is the world’s most widely celebrated festivity as majority of the Christians believe it is birthday of Jesus Christ, it is a thing of baffle to have all negative vices and incidences happening during a period which is acclaimed as the birthday of ‘The Prince of Peace’. Again, during this period, road accidents have been witnessed to be on the peak as the rush of many travellers render the road usage congested and extremely burdened. Traffic jams on major highways are highly witnessed or experienced by travellers during this season. For instance, in 24th December, 2014, a traffic jam in the major highway of Lokoja-Abuja Expressway was witnessed to ensue, and lasted for over six hours, spanning from early afternoon to the evening.

What could have been a period of sober reflection as preached in both churches and synagogues, has been witnessed as a period of juvenile delinquency, impious and vicious activities, uncommon norms and demeanours. However, in the quest to unravel the mystery behind the yuletide season omen, a wide study and research have been conducted to ascertain and certify the background of the Christmas celebration. It is common to note here that this write up is not put up to criticize or mock the faith of the Christians but to illuminate the history about Christmas for better clarity and comprehension.

From research, it is discovered that before the modern Christian celebration of Christmas otherwise called Xmas, the ancient Roman Empire used to celebrate what was known as Yuletide. This celebration was always done in the last days of the last month of the year to mark what was referred as the Winter Solstice: an old pre-Christianity belief of the moment when the Earth is in that point of its orbit where the northern or southern hemisphere is most inclined away from the sun. Their belief for the celebration was broaden to reflect the fact that the inclination of either of the hemisphere away from the sun, was the reason of the winter which always occurred and thus, they need to appease the Sun in idolatry worship. This appeasement was done in the Yuletide so as to reconnect the northern or southern hemisphere with the sun to allow the earth continue its normal orbit where the winter ice and cold will be discarded for the summer. This was the celebration of the ancient idolaters of Roman Empire. As discovered, this Yuletide was normally celebrated on 25th December of every year. As the acceptance of Christianity was absorbed by the Roman Empire thereafter, the same date of their Yuletide is what is now celebrated as Christmas!

Some sects in the Christendom believe that Jesus Christ birthday as December 25, is false. Thus, we have churches like Deeper Life Church, Apostolic Faith Church, Jehovah Witnesses etc, which do not celebrate Christmas on 25th December. The Deeper Life Bible Church uses this period for a retreat where they go to camps and render prayers to God. Some other sects like Jehovah Witnesses use this period to organise prayer visitation where they have to move from house to house, preaching in a certain or selected location of either city, town or village.

Conclusively, while the majority of the Christendom authentically and emphatically believe that Jesus Christ was born on December 25th, and without historical proof to that credence, but plainly on doctrinal belief, few sects in the same faith believe that the birth of Jesus Christ following the description of the Three Wise Men and the grazing sheep according to the Bible, should have been around October or September. Nevertheless, the majority of the whole world Christian faithfuls have queued to the belief that Jesus Christ was born on December 25th. Even if opinions and credence differ with different sects, many believe it should however be considered and celebrated as an annual End-Of-Year festival. Truly today, many people now view and regard Christmas celebration as End-of-Year festival.
