Strange: Zuma Rock, Near Abuja Attacked!

Just as one may be wondering about the possible assault that could be carried out on a solid gigantic rock like the Zuma Rock in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, near the FCT, we are smiling in telling the story of how actually the rock was attacked in five days ago. This strange attack resulted into a heavy bang sound that startled the military personnel stationed at a sentry near the rock on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

Zuma Rock at Tafa Local Government of Niger State

The current harmattan season especially that in the northern part of the country has suddenly made the weather and the atmospheric conditions in certain parts of Nigeria unfriendly and uncomfortable for both the humans, other animals, plants and even the rocks. The adverse effect of the harmattan has heated hard on both the animate and the inanimate objects and thereby resulted in several abnormalities. These abnormalities did not skip the grip of the famous Zuma Rock located on the outskirt and northwards of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.  This abnormal weather effect has, at the moment, left a deep crack like a scar in denting the normal surface of the famous rock. Several people especially those that have not been to the location of this rock for about two weeks, have come to see this sudden crack as an abnormally natural assault on the rock.

A mere sight of this crack on the rock from a distance will misconstrue the view of the onlooker as if a sturdy thunder has hit the surface of the rock and peel off its coat like the bark of a tree. The new surface of the rock now renders the entirety of the rock in defacement. It is something abnormal to the position and nature of the gigantic rock. No one has ever witnessed anything of this kind happened to or around Zuma Rock in ages. A wide scar on a sturdy rock as Zuma Rock is worth a tourist attraction and sightseeing. If not for the presence of the soldiers stationed closed to the rock, the whole scenario of attack would have still remained a puzzle or a sorcery intuition till now. The soldiers were there when the heavy bang occurred and they witnessed all that happened, and thereby disseminated this information of the strange occurrence to inquirers and spectators who later came to witness the new outlook of the rock on Monday this week.

According to an eyewitness, in the cool evening of Sunday this week, a terrible and weird breeze commenced an offensive blow around the rock. It was as if a heavy downpour was about to occur in that vicinity and which is so strange to the Abuja and environs topography. Rainfall around Abuja in November will be seen as another side of the dilapidation of the ozone layer in the common term of ‘Climate Change’. Even the aspiration or anticipation for rain while heavy breeze is in session is unimaginable in the month of November in Abuja and environs. If it is area like Calabar, Warri, Port Harcourt or Benin City etc, it well comprehended as those areas fall under the zone of Tropical Rain Forest and Swamps regions.    Therefore, the soldiers watched in perplexity and apprehension as the breeze exhibited its fancy of hostility on the huge rock to dismember its surface..

First, the weird wind started like a whirlwind and later transformed into a descending breeze shattering pebbles and particles everywhere. Thereafter, the wave of the wind started hitting hard on the body of the rock, then withdrew awhile and returned over and over again. This action repeatedly occurred in a scenario of somewhat mystical and supernatural. At every hit of the somewhat windstorm on the surface of the rock, a crack is resulted, until the heaviest hit pulled down a portion on the surface of the centre rock and prior to a heavy bang as if a thunderstorm hit hard on a hard object’s surface. Thereafter, other parts of the rock shook to its nerve as if a bomb blast just occurred on its summit on a descending motion. Particles from the rock splashed around and across the bush to a distance of about one hundred metres. The manner which the part of the rock pulled off the main body made it look like a long suffocation which the rock had embedded within its fold and could abstractly be yearning to discard or shake it off as burden. Despite the hit and bang sound resulted from the wind storm, it is still astonishing to cap it that a rock as sturdy as Zuma Rock could just had its wholesome of a body defaced so easily whereas such fate had met some other smaller and weaker rocks without leaving any impact as defaced scar on them.

In the morning of Monday, on a mood of eccentric and obfuscated inquisition, motorists who normally ply the route of either Abuja-Kaduna Expressway or those on shorter route of Suleja (Kaduna Road)-Abuja routine, had to stop over to have a sightsee of the new face of Zuma Rock. In a puzzled mood, nobody was certain about what actually happened to the rock that could result into such defacement. As it was, the only possible sort of information could only have been received from the soldiers on the sentry opposite the rock, but nobody was willing to engage them (soldiers) as bloody civilian mantra on every soldier lip may attract some sort of ill-treatment from the soldiers. For this, the first set of people that witnessed the Zuma Rock defaced surface left without any certainty or knowledge of what had transpired earlier to render the rock unto its current facial appearance. The soldiers on their own realised that the more people came to see the rock and without any authentic narration or explanation as related to the incidence from any eyewitness could result to misleading stories of rumours and gossips to the public. Hence, one of them walked down to the where the second set of inspecting viewers where busying doing their tourist view, and explained to them what actually happened. He ended his story by saying: “...me, this kind breeze wey fit pull down part of this kind big rock no look ordinary to me ooo”.  And that was how the incidence of the previous night breeze pervaded and the rumours that could have emanated from the different lips of witnesses was rendered moribund. As anticipated, people could have gone to the news media or social media to claim that: ‘Zuma Rock has been attacked by Boko Haram or spirits!’ Just as it is currently witnessed that any information is now easily disseminated to Nigerians and the entire world in effect to score a cheap political relevance even when it is obvious that such information can never have existed in the real sense of human norms and related occurrences.

Some naturalist Nigerians after their sights on the new face of the defaced Zuma Rock, had lamented on the abnormal omen as sign of bad luck in the future but concluded that the shattered surface of the rock will recover and regain its normal outward appearance again. They cast such belief on the natural notion that there are supernatural forces dwelling in Zuma Rock. Some of them even said that the attack of the harsh breeze in the form of a windstorm was a spiritual bout among the different spiritual forces dwelling in the rock fighting for control and supremacy. What a belief!
