The immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom state and Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio was reportedly arrested yesterday by the operatives of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on allegation of fraud running into billions of Naira.
Senator Godswill Akpabio
The former governor has, however, dismissed the report that he was arrested by EFCC. He took to Twitter and telephone interview on television station (AIT) to announce that he was only invited by the anti-graft agency and he honoured the invitation.
In his tweets, the Senate Minority Leader said that he had nothing to hide that is why he walked into the office of EFCC with no any iota of fear.
According to his statement during the telephone interview with AIT, the former governor expressed that the invitation to the EFCC was even overdue. This is because he was not opportune to honour the invitation at the appropriate time due to the motor accident he had during that period. According to him, the car accident he had in Abuja some few weeks ago coincided with the time he was actually invited by the EFCC. However, he decided to answer the call now to clear the air on some ambiguity bothering his regime as governor of Akwa State. And after answering the few questions asked by the anti-graft agency, he was permitted to go home. No indictment was instituted by EFCC, and no arrest was made. It was just a civil situation of clearing the insinuations from some allegations from a citizen from his state. Issues like this are normally witnessed in advanced societies where democracy is the governance standard.
