An operation carried out by the Edo state command of the Department of Security Service (DSS) ended in tragedy when the operatives shot a man who was the father of the suspect they wanted, PM News reports.
The suspect, simply identified as Omozokpia was wanted by the DSS for fraud related crimes and had been trailed by the operatives from Benin City to Ekpoma but when the house was raided, the suspect’s father, Christopher Irabor was killed.
The victim was said to be a porter at the school of medicine at the Ambrose Ali university but was at his residence in Uwene quarters, Illeh village when DSS operatives stormed the family’s residence.
Mrs Irabor explained that the DSS operatives had broken into the compound in the middle of the night and they were all forced outside. She claimed that her husband tried to prevent them from gaining entry into their room and was short by one of the operatives.
She added that when they couldn’t find the suspect, they took her younger son, Omozokpia with them.
A source at the office of the DSS who spoke to PM News claimed that the killing of the porter was necessary because he had tried to disarm one of the operatives. He said that they were rounding all the occupants out but Irabor surprised them with a cutlass and attempted to take possession of a gun which led to his being shot.
In another development, officials of DSS besieged the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party and prevented members from gaining access ito the building.
