How Peace Finally Returned To Burkina Faso

                          Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari
The presidency has revealed how Nigeria played a crucial role in restoring democracy in Burkina Faso following the extraordinary session of ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Governments in Abuja headed by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
According to a news release from the presidency published on Premium Times, the ECOWAS reached an agreement for the the reinstatement of President Michel Kafando as the transition President of Burkina Faso.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo represented President Buhari Wednesday in Ouagadougou where the deal was finally sealed but noted that there are still difficult issues to be resolved as fallouts of the coup crisis but said“progress would continue.”
“As you know, President Kafando had been detained by the RSP, -the presidential guard-but they have now stepped down as you can see, and they are now part of the process to ensure that the transition goes on.
“What we have seen today is how ECOWAS states came together basically to agree and see to it that President Kafando was reinstated and now that has been accomplished,” the VP was quoted.
Mr. Osinbajo said Nigeria would continue to play its brotherly role for Burkina Faso and also commending the international community for coming together to condemn the coup.
“I think it is very clear going by the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the legal instruments of the African Union, that coups are no longer fashionable and no longer acceptable. In fact, it is punishable to take power by force. As soon as this coup took place, the entire ECOWAS, AU and the entire international community rose with one voice against it,” he said.
President Yayi of Benin was named as facilitator, while Nigeria was represented by the Vice President.
president Buhari had earlier condemned the detention of the Interim President, Prime Minister and other ministers of the transitional government of Burkina Faso in a coup d’etat stressing that the “brazen contravention of the constitution and transitional charter of Burkina Faso by elements of the Presidential Guard under the leadership of General Gilbert Diendere”.
